![]() ![]() It was the only bad experience of our otherwise perfect trip! Even without the food poisoning, please believe me, the FL is NOT worth it - even if it was a fraction of the cost or effort. Needless to say, she hasn't looked at anything with truffles in it since (and says she may never). It would be comical to throw up such an expensive meal if it wasn't so sad that we missed an entire day of our trip. Classic food poisoning! The rest of us were fine, so we have to assume it was the one thing she ate that we didn't - the truffle m&c. She was better after 12 hours and was able to sip tea and eat saltines. We cancelled all our plans for that day and evening. The next morning, my friend's husband met us for breakfast and said that my Bestie had been sick in the bathroom all night and was so weak, she could barely make it back to bed. We left feeling like we still didn't get the allure, and vowed never to return. The rest of our meal was good, but again, not anywhere near the best meal we'd ever had for a price tag of $1400+. When it arrived, the server shaved that truffle over her dish until it was covered. As we placed our dinner orders, the birthday girl was the only one who ordered their signature Truffle Mac & Cheese ($100). We ordered a single bottle of champagne, so we had one glass each to toast. The service is ordinary and unremarkable. There is literally NO ambiance in the upstairs section of the restaurant (plain decor and tables & and a dingy restroom with peeling paint and exposed pipes - I guess that's why FL is undergoing a complete makeover now). and then escorted upstairs to a small table, even though there were empty tables throughout our entire meal. ![]() When we arrived, the FL looked even shabbier than I remembered from a few years ago. So, six of us (including the concierge at Bardessono and our Platinum Amex concierge) made 900+ phone calls at the appointed hour and the Amex concierge finally got through and made a res on her birthday at 9pm. For this trip, my Bestie wanted to celebrate her milestone birthday at the FL. We just didn't think it lived up to the hype and the extraordinary measures required to get a reservation. ![]() My husband and I had visited several times before and had previously bought into the hype and had eaten at the famed French Laundry, While it was a good meal with some nice, unique touches, we had no desire to go back. We spent 12 days in the wine country, 8 of them in beautiful Yountville. We planned it around my Bestie's 45th birthday. You can read more reviews and find the best prices here. Our best friends and my husband and I planned a glorious 17-day trip to California last year. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to kick start their culinary adventure and begin to refine their ability and technique. So far I have made several recipes including: Tomato Sorbet, Poached Fois Gras, Infused Oils, and Salmon Tartare.įor me, The French Laundry cookbook is one of the most approachable books geared towards fine dining. However, I found the writing to be very easy to understand and thorough in its explanation of the steps. Most dishes do require planning, time, and multiple steps. That doesn’t mean the recipes are quick or easy, however. Thomas Keller shows that innovative and interesting recipes can be made with basic equipment with the right amount of thoughtfulness and patience. Unlike most other books reviewed on this site, The French Laundry doesn’t require an arsenal of chemicals and a laboratory of tools. The French Laundry cookbook features 150 recipes that are exact replicas of what is used at the restaurant, scaled down and tested in home kitchens. The restaurant is one of a few in the US to hold 3 Michelin stars and as long as Keller is at the helm, it’s at no risk of losing them. ![]() Thomas Keller is an extraordinary chef who has transformed dining in America, introducing the country to new techniques and his own brand of perfectionism. The French Laundry is arguably the best restaurant in the United States and has been for quite some time. ![]()
